Everything you have ever wanted, is sitting on the other side of fear.
⁃ George Addair
Familiar pain and fear commonly prevent people from embarking on things that are the unknown them. Many times we are afraid we are asking for a whole lot more pain if we change. This fear and comfort in the pain we already know prevents us from growing. It’s a distorted sense of security. This vicious cycle feeds off of itself leaving us feeling empty, full of doubt and even self hatred. It is an inhibitor to starting the sobriety journey. You may feel safer with the pain you are enduring today. Your mind may be working overtime to manufacture all of the excuses why it just isn’t possible.
It is counterintuitive but our pain actually comes from the resistance to change and not the change itself. In change, we learn to move forward, make new friendships and start new relationships. Let’s let go of the old and embrace growth!
Here are 5 tips to get started:
- Adjust your perspective on change to a positive one.
- Surround yourself with change oriented people.
- Make a list of small changes and start crossing them off!
- Celebrate any growth.
- Make efforts to be in a positive growth environment.
