Ace your ACEs

So what are ACEs? ACEs are adverse childhood experiences. Experts have found the vast majority of people struggling with addiction have had a childhood trauma. Even though these traumas happened years ago, they have long lasting effects that reach into the person’s long-term adult health.

These traumas include direct physical, emotional and sexual abuse or neglect. Also, exposure to another person’s traumatic events such as addiction, divorce or incarceration can be traumatic for a young person. These experiences obviously create stress but this type of toxic stress damages the child’s growing brain. People with higher ACE scores have more tendencies to have trouble with addiction. You can take this survey to determine your ACE score.
