Are you entitled? What is learned helplessness?

The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.
-F. Scott Fitzgerald

What is learned helplessness? According to Oxford it is a condition in which a person suffers from a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression. Simply put, the person feels like they don’t have any control over what happens to them and has given up and accepted their current state as their fate. The longer the person stays in this state of mind the worse the vicious cycle becomes. They may fall into depression and increase their anxiety levels. Many times people feel this way about starting their recovery journey. This is especially true for people that have relapsed in the past.

You can overcome learned helplessness! Even if you feel like there is nothing or no one that can help you. At Though the Archway, we help our residents identify their negative thought and behavior patterns to replace them with optimistic and rational thoughts. This practice with our team of professionals will help disrupt the vicious learned helplessness cycle. It is a profound experience ultimately set with the goal of permanent sobriety.
